Email Verification: What the Checks Actually Prove

How SMTP verification works, what catch-all and unknown results mean, and the four state split measured across 383,368 addresses.

Verification is the cheapest insurance in outbound and the most misunderstood step in it. A verifier does not tell you whether an address is good. It tells you what a receiving mail server was willing to say about it, which is a narrower and more useful claim.

We analyzed 383,368 addresses we analyzed through live SMTP verification. The split was 43.4% confirmed valid, 23.9% invalid, 16.7% catch-all and 16.0% unknown. Two of those four states are answers and two are refusals to answer, and treating all four as a single valid or invalid decision is where most bounce problems begin.

How accurate is email verification?

Accurate on the addresses a server answers for, and silent on the rest. In our sample of 383,368 addresses, 43.4% returned a confirmed valid result and 32.7% returned catch-all or unknown, meaning roughly a third of any raw list cannot be resolved by verification alone.

When should I verify a list?

In the week you send, not at import. Contact data decays continuously, so a verification result describes the day it ran and nothing after it. Verifying at export and again before a large send is the practical compromise.

Can catch-all addresses be verified?

No. A catch-all server accepts mail for every address by design, so no probe can distinguish a real mailbox from an invented one. It covered 16.7% of our sample and needs its own sending policy rather than being merged into valid or invalid.
