B2B Data Operations: Sourcing, Hygiene and Compliance

Buying, enriching, deduplicating and auditing contact data, with the decay rates and verification baselines to measure against.

Data operations is the unglamorous half of outbound and the half that decides the other one. A perfectly written sequence sent to a list nobody audited will underperform a plain sequence sent to a clean one, every time.

The baseline worth measuring against comes from 383,368 addresses we analyzed through live SMTP verification: 43.4% confirmed valid, 23.9% invalid, 16.7% catch-all. Any list far below that on confirmed valid is not ordinary raw data, and any supplier whose file sits far below it should be asked why.

These guides cover where data comes from, how to check what you were sold, how to keep it usable, and what you have to be able to show about a specific record if someone asks.

Frequently asked

How fast does B2B contact data decay?

Around 2.1% a month under the widely cited database decay model, which compounds to roughly a quarter of a database per year. Firmographic attributes move more slowly than contacts, but they move.

What should I check before using a purchased list?

Provenance per record, duplicate rate on address and domain, role address share, ICP match on a manual sample, a verification sample of 500, age indicators, and collisions with existing customers and opt-outs. That audit takes about an hour.

Do I inherit my data vendor's compliance position?

No. Once a file enters your database you are the controller for what you do next, so the lawful basis, the notice to recipients and the response to an objection are yours regardless of what the vendor's website claims.
